How To Keep Your Creative Edge as a Beat Maker

How do you keep your creative edge as a beat maker?

Answering a fellow beat maker’s question:

“I was just on YouTube looking at a couple videos and I came across one of yours. After watching one I had to watch another and then another. I just really wanted to say thank you, you have a lot of useful info in your videos that I feel could help a lot of others. I’ve been producing since about 2000 and I don’t have any formal training its just something I picked up and loved. I don’t have anyone to help or guide me I don’t even have any producer friends. I said all that to say that I’m at a point where I feel really stagnant, all I have to really go off of is what ‘I’ feel sounds good which feel is hindering me. I listen to you explain a lot of different things that I feel like I should know but I don’t. I guess my question is how do you continue grow, learn, and keep your creative edge as a producer? Any input would be greatly appreciated!”

Be Hungry for Knowledge

One of the most fundamental things you need when striving to perfect anything, and in particular to master a craft like music production – is a sheer hunger to learn!

As a general rule of thumb, it takes up to about 10,000 hours to really become a master at any craft.  This means a lot of hard work and dedication from you over an extended period of time.

The more beats that you make, and the harder you work at improving your various music production skills – the better you’ll become overall.

One of my biggest tips to keeping your creative edge in music production and growing yourself as a beatmaker is to get into the habit of continually seeking new knowledge, and putting it into action!

There’s an absolute wealth of invaluable knowledge online – via blogs, websites, forums, YouTube, etc.  And in many cases you’re only a simple Google search away from discovering the new techniques, tools, strategies, tips and knowledge you need to get better – and to ultimately become great!

Experimentation

Another tip for keeping your creative edge and growing overall as a beat maker is this: Don’t be afraid to experiment!

As music producers, many times we get caught up in a specific routine of the way we approach making a beat or particular effects or techniques we often use.

But sometimes you just have to step out of your regular beat making practice every now and again, and try something new.

I’ve many times pleasantly surprised myself by simply experimenting with a new plugin I’d never used before, or trying a brand new technique I just learned from a YouTube tutorial.

Don’t be afraid to test some things out.  You’ll push yourself to continue to progress and grow your skills and knowledge as a producer.
