{"id":1038,"date":"2013-02-01T21:39:46","date_gmt":"2013-02-01T21:39:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tcustomz.com\/blog\/?p=1038"},"modified":"2014-01-06T08:22:58","modified_gmt":"2014-01-06T08:22:58","slug":"bass-line-tips-for-sampled-hip-hop-beats-part-2-how-to-tutorial-ableton-live","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/bass-line-tips-for-sampled-hip-hop-beats-part-2-how-to-tutorial-ableton-live\/","title":{"rendered":"Bass Line Tips for Sampled Hip Hop Beats (Part 2) &#8211; How To, Tutorial, Ableton Live"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Here is the Part 2 bass line tutorial as promised.\u00a0 Instead of this being two-part series as I had first mentioned, I have included extra info in this tutorial to help you in preparation for recording your bass line and Part 3 will cover the final recording process.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"726\" height=\"408\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Au1g7XoLfu0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This tutorial covers:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Filtering the Sample using a High-pass Filter (HPF):<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 By applying a HPF to your sample, you will be removing some of the lower (bass) frequencies and allowing room for the bass line you are going to compose. As I mention, I usually set my filter threshold at around 200-300 Hz.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t apply a filter to your sample, you may run into problems with the low-end frequencies clashing during your mixing process.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Picking a Bass Sound:<\/strong><\/em> Picking an appropriate bass sound\u00a0 really comes down to your personal preference and the track that you&#8217;re working on.\u00a0 I highly recommend <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B002UK4L1M\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B002UK4L1M&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=tcustocom-20\" target=\"_blank\">Spectrasonics Trilian<\/a><\/strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=tcustocom-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B002UK4L1M\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/> if you are looking for a solid bass virtual instrument to use with your DAW.\u00a0 There are a ton of awesome presets and the patches are pretty easy to tweak if needed.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Finding the Key:<\/strong> <\/em>Having some music theory under your belt (as I talk about in the <a href=\"http:\/\/tcustomz.com\/blog\/tutorial-bass-line-tips-for-your-sampled-hip-hop-beats\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bass Line Tutorial Part 1<\/a>) is very helpful when trying to identify the key of your sample.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.basicmusictheory.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">BasicMusicTheory.com<\/a> has some good information to get you started.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Transpose the Bass to a &#8220;Playable&#8221; Key:<\/strong> <\/em>For those of you who aren&#8217;t fluid at playing the keys, this step should help you out.\u00a0 This will help you transpose a key like C#m:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/c-sharp-minor-scale-on-piano-keyboard.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1040\" alt=\"c-sharp-minor-scale-on-piano-keyboard\" src=\"http:\/\/tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/c-sharp-minor-scale-on-piano-keyboard.png\" width=\"589\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/c-sharp-minor-scale-on-piano-keyboard.png 620w, https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/c-sharp-minor-scale-on-piano-keyboard-300x111.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 589px) 100vw, 589px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>and transpose it into a more &#8220;playable&#8221; key like Am, where you are only playing white keys:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/a-minor-scale-on-piano-keyboard.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1039\" alt=\"a-minor-scale-on-piano-keyboard\" src=\"http:\/\/tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/a-minor-scale-on-piano-keyboard.png\" width=\"577\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/a-minor-scale-on-piano-keyboard.png 620w, https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/a-minor-scale-on-piano-keyboard-300x111.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 577px) 100vw, 577px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nHopefully this offers you some more insight into the process I go through to create a bass line for a sampled beat.\u00a0 If you missed the Part 1 tutorial, you can <a href=\"http:\/\/tcustomz.com\/blog\/tutorial-bass-line-tips-for-your-sampled-hip-hop-beats\/\">watch it here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/subscription_center?add_user=tcustomzdotcom\">SUBSCRIBE to our Youtube Channel<\/a> for all our latest beat making videos and tutorials!<br \/>\nUntil next time, Happy Beat Making!
