Well here are my tips for you sample-based producers to help clean up your samples by “removing” the existing drums.

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD YOUR FREE HIP HOP DRUM KIT >>

How To Remove Drums From Sample

Tip #1: Chop Around the Sample

The easiest (and most obvious) option would be to completely cut the drums out of your sample altogether. However in many cases, slicing around the sample’s existing drums can leave you with undesirable pieces of audio to work with for your beat. This would really depend on the musical attributes of the song you’re sampling as well as the style of production you’re working on. The most straight forward way to actually remove drums from sample, but many times not the technique you want to use.

Tip #2: Filter the Sample (HPF)

With the majority of the Hip Hop beats that I work on personally, a single-band EQ (high-pass filter) will solve much of this problem! A HPF allows your to clean up the lower frequencies of the sample, and is a good start to cleaning up the bass, kick drums, and most of the snare frequencies. Setting the threshold on your filter will vary on a case by case basis, again depending of the traits of the audio you’re sampling.

Tip #3: Multiband EQ

Your next option is the multiband equalizer. This EQ will give you much more control over the sample and the ability to shape and mold the audio with much more precision. I typically use an 8-band EQ in those special cases when I need to “dip out” or “cut off” other parts of the sample.

Tip #4: Apply “Attack” to Sample Chops

So when filtering and EQing the sample don’t quite do the trick to remove the drums, this technique can be huge life saver! In the cases when you’re slicing on the sample’s drum hits (kick, snare, etc), applying a quick attack to each sample slice can work wonders. Essentially what the attack does is quickly fades in the sample slice from when it’s triggered. Typically I will apply a 20-40ms attack to the majority of my beats and it yields tremendous results! It’s a very subtle strategy, but can make a world of difference when you need to remove drums from sample!

— Let’s Connect! —

I’m very reachable on the following: Official Website | YouTube | Facebook | Twitter | Soundcloud | Instagram

Please Like, Comment & Share if this video was helpful 🙂

Download 100% Custom Sound Kits & Drum Samples >>

1-ON 1 MUSIC PRODUCTION COACHING >>

How To Add Effects to Sampled Beats >>>

In one of the recent beat-making videos I had uploaded, I received a question about how to remove drums from sample.
