{"id":5533,"date":"2015-03-06T05:46:54","date_gmt":"2015-03-06T05:46:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tcustomz.com\/blog\/?p=5533"},"modified":"2015-04-23T05:31:21","modified_gmt":"2015-04-23T05:31:21","slug":"sampling-tips-piecing-together-puzzle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/sampling-tips-piecing-together-puzzle\/","title":{"rendered":"Sampling Tips: Piecing Together the Puzzle"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Here are a few <strong>sampling tips<\/strong> for you to consider when you&#8217;re fine chopping a record for Hip Hop beats.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OPBY5cDhWHE\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/tcustomz.com\/free-downloads.html\" target=\"_blank\"><button class=\"btn btn-large btn-primary\" type=\"button\">CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD 51 FREE HIP HOP DRUM SAMPLES &gt;&gt;<\/button><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>After reading many of the comments and questions from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/youtube.com\/tcustomzdotcom\" target=\"_blank\">my YouTube channel<\/a>, in particular on my sample-based beat making videos&#8230; it seemed that there was some possible confusion from some folks\u00a0on how long it actually takes me to record a MIDI sample sequence into my <a title=\"What\u2019s the Best DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) for Hip Hop Beats?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/best-daw-digital-audio-workstation-software-hip-hop-music-production\/\" target=\"_blank\">DAW<\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0complete the beat overall.<\/p>\n<p>In many cases, it may appear that I record my sample sequences in a single\u00a0take,\u00a0when in all actuality my\u00a0process for sampling typically requires a little more effort &#8211; specifically for those cases where I really get in and fine chop the record.<\/p>\n<p>Admittedly, there are instances where I do find a nice\u00a0loop or I otherwise already have an idea in my head of how I plan to arrange the chops. However, it&#8217;s not always that easy \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>My Approach for This Beat<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-5815\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/sampling.png\" alt=\"sampling\" width=\"166\" height=\"81\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/sampling.png 889w, https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/sampling-300x146.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 166px) 100vw, 166px\" \/>Using a recent <a title=\"Soulful Kanye West style Beat | Hip-Hop \/ R&amp;B Crossover Instrumental 2015\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/soulful-kanye-west-style-beat-hip-hop-rb-crossover-instrumental-2015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hip Hop instrumental I released,\u00a0<\/a><em><a title=\"Soulful Kanye West style Beat | Hip-Hop \/ R&amp;B Crossover Instrumental 2015\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/soulful-kanye-west-style-beat-hip-hop-rb-crossover-instrumental-2015\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Be There&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>as an example &#8211; the fact that it uses a well known 90&#8217;s R&amp;B sample&#8230; I knew I wasn&#8217;t just going to loop it up. \u00a0But rather, I precisely chopped on the upwards of about 81\u00a0small audio pieces, <a href=\"http:\/\/tcustomz.com\/vox-sample-kit-vol-1.html\" target=\"_blank\">phrases and vocal stabs<\/a> to work with.<\/p>\n<p>And so the approach on this track for me was to &#8220;marry&#8221; parts from the beginning, middle and end of the sample\u00a0in such a way that the melodies aligned and the\u00a04, 8 and 16 bar sequences made\u00a0sense overall.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;What parts catch my attention first? What pieces can I start with? Maybe I&#8217;m starting to work on the beginning of the sample sequence. Okay&#8230; let&#8217;s try to find two or three, maybe four sample slices that I can get the ball rolling with. For this particular track, I didn&#8217;t start with a drum pattern or anything. \u00a0I just got in and experimented with some of the chops. \u00a0And what I found was three sample slices to start the beat with.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Instead of trying to figure out an entire four or eight bar pattern at once, I went ahead and recorded in the first few samples into my\u00a0software. \u00a0In my experience, sometimes if I don&#8217;t get a\u00a0particular\u00a0idea translated into my software while I&#8217;m <em>in the moment<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; I may forget it!<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you&#8217;ve been in a creative state before while playing the piano or guitar, where\u00a0you&#8217;ve come up with a really great chord progression or melody run\u00a0&#8211; and later when you try to replay it exactly as before, you can&#8217;t remember how it went.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is why\u00a0I highly recommend for you to\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">press the record button often<\/span>!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Piecing Together the Puzzle<\/h2>\n<p>I think two\u00a0of the most important things to remember when you&#8217;re sampling is:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>To trust your ear.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>And to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">NOT<\/span> be afraid to experiment and try some different techniques out.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4>Look at it like piecing together a puzzle.<\/h4>\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-5817\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/sampling-tips.jpg\" alt=\"sampling tips\" width=\"299\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/sampling-tips.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/sampling-tips-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;So when you sit down to put together a puzzle, what&#8217;s the approach you might take?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>One approach you could take is if there are distinguishable parts in that puzzle&#8230; let&#8217;s say your puzzle is a yellow balloon floating in blue sky. \u00a0And you want to piece together this entire thing. \u00a0You could potentially start with\u00a0putting together the yellow pieces of the balloon simply because they are\u00a0easily identifiable.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And taking that analogy back to creating a beat, that balloon could be whatever particular parts of the sample that really grabbed your attention to begin with. \u00a0And so you could start with those parts to get the track started.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00a0&#8220;And then another approach that a lot of people take when putting together a puzzle is to start with the edge pieces. \u00a0They&#8217;re are a lot easier to identify, and will help you to start developing the framework. \u00a0And taking this analogy back to making the beat, I&#8217;ve got the first three chops to start the sequence&#8230; and if I didn&#8217;t have any ideas for how to fill in the middle, I could go ahead and skip to the end of the loop and fill in the turnaround.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>\u00a0Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>At the end of the day, sampling can potentially be an easy process.
