{"id":7012,"date":"2015-08-11T10:40:42","date_gmt":"2015-08-11T10:40:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/?p=7012"},"modified":"2015-12-07T00:16:23","modified_gmt":"2015-12-07T00:16:23","slug":"ableton-arrangement-view-vs-session-view-hip-hop-beats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/ableton-arrangement-view-vs-session-view-hip-hop-beats\/","title":{"rendered":"Ableton Arrangement View vs. Session View (Hip Hop Beats)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>In this quick video learn the differences between the <strong>Ableton arrangement view<\/strong> and session view\u00a0and how I use Live 9 to create Hip Hop beats.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/l3jouffZp0M\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>As you may already know, Ableton Live comes equipped with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">two unique ways to preview\u00a0your sessions<\/span>,\u00a0with the arrangement view and session view. \u00a0You can easily <strong>press the\u00a0TAB button on your keyboard to toggle between each<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing to keep in mind is that Ableton is a very extensive software with <em>many<\/em> capabilities, and so there are numerous ways to use it aligned\u00a0with your particular\u00a0workflow.<\/p>\n<p>Both the arrangement and session view have their place during the creative process, but\u00a0you may see\u00a0various\u00a0musicians\u00a0&#8211; from DJs, to beat makers, to EDM producers &#8211; using them\u00a0in a slightly different fashion.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ableton Arrangement\u00a0View<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve watched any of my past<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/ableton-live-tutorials-2\/\" target=\"_blank\"> tutorial videos<\/a>, you&#8217;ll primarily see me working in the Ableton <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">arrangement view<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7023\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/ableton-arrangement-view.jpg\" alt=\"ableton arrangement view\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/ableton-arrangement-view.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/ableton-arrangement-view-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/ableton-arrangement-view-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is where I directly record in my MIDI sequences, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/how-to-sample-in-ableton-live-9-tutorial-easy-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\">chop samples<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/sampling-tutorial-transpose-vs-time-stretching-how-to-find-tempo-bpm\" target=\"_blank\">time-stretch audio<\/a> and\u00a0almost everything else besides the final\u00a0mixing. \u00a0That doesn&#8217;t mean that it&#8217;s\u00a0the <em>only <\/em>way, it&#8217;s just the most straight forward way I&#8217;ve found when working on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/tcustomz.com\" target=\"_blank\">Hip Hop beats<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I can get right to working on the meat and potatoes of the track, and have all of my elements ready to go as I progress further into the track, and start fleshing\u00a0out the track&#8217;s arrangement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ableton Session\u00a0View<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Now because I mostly\u00a0work out of arrangement mode, I\u00a0typically only use the session view for mixing. \u00a0This is where <strong>you have<\/strong> <strong>direct access to all of your track volume meters.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7025\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/ableton-session-view.jpg\" alt=\"ableton session view\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/ableton-session-view.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/ableton-session-view-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/ableton-session-view-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But you also\u00a0have some other unique controls available to you here as well.<\/p>\n<p>Namely, the option to <strong>record in multiple clips for each MIDI track<\/strong>. This is where you can experiment with a number of\u00a0MIDI sequences.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7026\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/session-view-record-clip.png\" alt=\"session view clip\" width=\"600\" height=\"560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/session-view-record-clip.png 600w, https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/session-view-record-clip-300x280.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The thing I personally don&#8217;t like about this method<\/span>\u00a0is\u00a0once the sequence has\u00a0been programmed as a clip in the session view, in order to\u00a0push that clip\u00a0to the arrangement view you have to\u00a0record it a second time.<\/p>\n<p>To me this seems like double the work\u00a0&#8211; recording to session view first, then re-recording to arrangement view.<\/p>\n<p>However, I <em>do<\/em> see this approach being a lot more practical for me if I were actually creating a live DJ\u00a0set, rather than simply programming\u00a0Hip Hop beats. Especially since you&#8217;re able to launch any of the pre-recorded clips during your live playback by simply click the respective clip&#8217;s play button.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Summary<\/h2>\n<p>Over the years of using Live, I&#8217;ve developed the workflow that works best for me and the tracks that\u00a0I make.
