And that&#8217;s why\u00a0highly recommend investing into building up your personal <a href=\"http:\/\/tcustomz.com\/sound-kits-bundle.html\" target=\"_blank\">sound library.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t get me wrong, there are some great free sounds and plugins available online. \u00a0You just have to be careful. You may want to check out some various music forums and reviews online first before downloading every <a href=\"http:\/\/tcustomz.com\/free-downloads.html\" target=\"_blank\">free sound pack<\/a> on the web. \u00a0I&#8217;ve also compiled a list of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/top-5-vst-plugins-hip-hop-music-beats\/\" target=\"_blank\">my top five go-to vsts<\/a> that I personally use that you might consider checking out.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tcustomz.com\/sound-kits-bundle.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7203 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/quality-sounds-1024x320.jpg\" alt=\"quality-sounds\" width=\"726\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/quality-sounds-1024x320.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/quality-sounds-300x94.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 726px) 100vw, 726px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>2.<\/strong>\u00a0Quality Studio Monitors<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The\u00a0purpose of a good studio monitor is to give you a &#8220;true&#8221; representation of what your mix actually sounds like<\/strong>. \u00a0In other words, your\u00a0monitors should project\u00a0a &#8220;flat&#8221; or natural\u00a0sound, meaning there is\u00a0no additional enhancements, EQ, etc &#8211; to improve the listening\u00a0quality.<\/p>\n<p>This is important because <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">you want your music to sound good on <em>ALL<\/em> systems and devices it\u00a0will be\u00a0played on<\/span> &#8211; including a computer, mobile device, car system, club or bar, home stereo and the list goes on.<\/p>\n<p>There are a myriad of quality studio monitors on the market at a varying range of prices, so I&#8217;d definitely recommend doing your own research to figure out what will work best for you and your specific budget.<\/p>\n<p>I personally use the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zzounds.com\/item--KRKRP5G3\" target=\"_blank\">KRK Rokit 5 studio monitors<\/a>, and while they aren&#8217;t <em>ideal<\/em> for my home studio, I&#8217;ve trained my ear to use them in my particular environment over the years. \u00a0I say that they aren&#8217;t ideal because they are a somewhat smaller monitor and don&#8217;t\u00a0pick up some of the really low sub-bass frequencies like a\u00a0larger speaker could.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, you&#8217;ll want a studio monitor that will give you a &#8220;as close to true&#8221; representation of your mix as possible.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zzounds.com\/a--3187548\/item--KRKRP5G3\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7204\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/krk-rokit-5.jpg\" alt=\"krk-rokit-5\" width=\"449\" height=\"398\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/krk-rokit-5.jpg 868w, https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/krk-rokit-5-300x265.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 449px) 100vw, 449px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>3.<\/strong> Multiple References<\/h2>\n<p>Even though you may do your primary mixing\u00a0on your studio monitors, one strategy that\u00a0many folks use is to also reference that same mix on other devices as well &#8211; including headphones, on a laptop, or in a vehicle stereo system. \u00a0This will give you other perspectives on your mix and how it will sound before you finalize it.<\/p>\n<p>This will also be very helpful if you <em>don&#8217;t<\/em> have a perfect studio setup\u00a0&#8211; with proper\u00a0acoustic treatment,\u00a0high-end\u00a0monitors, etc.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been using the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zzounds.com\/a--3187548\/item--SENHD280PRO\" target=\"_blank\">Sennheiser HD-280 PRO<\/a>\u00a0as my reference headphones for many years now, and I have to say they are an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">excellent purchase<\/span> for the price point. I actually bought two pair \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ultimately, you&#8217;ll want a fairly consistent representation of your mix\u00a0across all the devices you play your track back on.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zzounds.com\/a--3187548\/item--SENHD280PRO\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7205 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/sennheiser-280-pro.jpg\" alt=\"sennheiser-280-pro\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/sennheiser-280-pro.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/sennheiser-280-pro-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>4.<\/strong> Proper Gain Staging<\/h2>\n<p>Gain staging is a simple, yet very important aspect of your mix. In a nutshell, <strong>this process consists of leveling\u00a0your individual tracks relative to each other<\/strong> &#8211; ensuring there isn&#8217;t any clipping or unwanted distortion, and that you have enough head room on your master bus prior to any advanced mixing processes and your final master and compression.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d recommend checking out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Enhcve9Lblc\" target=\"_blank\">this video for a quick 5-minute\u00a0explanation<\/a> of this process.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tcustomz.com\/mix-master.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7206\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/gain-staging-levels-1024x496.png\" alt=\"gain-staging-levels\" width=\"594\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/gain-staging-levels-1024x496.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/gain-staging-levels-300x145.png 300w, https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/gain-staging-levels.png 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>5.<\/strong> EQ (hpf)<\/h2>\n<p><strong>A simple EQ, and in many cases just a HPF (high-pass filter), can really take your mixes a long way.<\/strong> \u00a0When I first started making beats, I was pretty oblivious to the\u00a0idea of filtering and EQing my sounds &#8211; even if I had\u00a0only used it\u00a0to remove the excess bass and mid range of particular\u00a0sounds in my beats.<\/p>\n<p>The more sounds you introduce\u00a0into your music, the more imperative it\u00a0becomes to contain certain sounds to fixed frequency ranges. \u00a0If you&#8217;re consistently lacking clarity in your mixes and can&#8217;t seem to get rid of the &#8220;mud&#8221; in your mid range, it could be as simple as rolling off some of the non-essential mids and lows.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tcustomz.com\/mix-master.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5797 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/remove-drum-from-sample.png\" alt=\"EQ - filter\" width=\"434\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/remove-drum-from-sample.png 434w, https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/remove-drum-from-sample-300x124.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 434px) 100vw, 434px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>6.<\/strong> Avoid Ear Fatigue<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Sometimes you&#8217;ve just got to give your ears a break.<\/strong> \u00a0Especially when you&#8217;re working on a mix for any extended length of time, your ears may get tired and you may\u00a0not be hearing\u00a0your mixes as you think you are.<\/p>\n<p>I personally tend to get ear fatigue rather quickly, and so in many cases I&#8217;ll work on mixing <a href=\"http:\/\/tcustomz.com\" target=\"_blank\">my beats<\/a>\u00a0in short intervals. \u00a0Maybe only 15-20 minutes at a time &#8211; let my ears rest for a short period, and come back with a fresh perspective to resume my mix.<\/p>\n<p>The last thing you want is to force yourself to finalize your\u00a0mix while you have ear fatigue, and realize later that the final version of the track\u00a0wasn&#8217;t what you had intended.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7211 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/mix-low-level.png\" alt=\"mix-low-level\" width=\"412\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/mix-low-level.png 412w, https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/mix-low-level-300x197.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 412px) 100vw, 412px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>7.<\/strong>\u00a0Mix with\u00a0Your Ears<\/h2>\n<p>Don&#8217;t get distracted by the visual representation of your track and rely on only what you&#8217;re seeing. \u00a0The various meters and visual controls in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/best-daw-digital-audio-workstation-software-hip-hop-music-production\/\" target=\"_blank\">your DAW<\/a> and other plugins are there for a reason, and you definitely want to utilize them to assist your process.<\/p>\n<p>However, you want to<strong> use your <em>ears<\/em> to help make most of your mixing decisions for you<\/strong>. \u00a0Put those two things on the side of your head to work, because ultimately all that matters is how the music sounds, not what it looks like.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tcustomz.com\/mix-master.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7209 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/mix-with-your-ears.jpg\" alt=\"mix-with-your-ears\" width=\"570\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/mix-with-your-ears.jpg 570w, https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/mix-with-your-ears-300x237.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>8.<\/strong> Panning<\/h2>\n<p>Panning certain elements in your music\u00a0is going to open you up for many mixing improvements. You&#8217;ll be able to better take advantage of the stereo field and to\u00a0<strong>turn out wider mixes<\/strong>, include <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">more sounds into your track<\/span> without it sounding overly cluttered, and also to help <strong>form a &#8220;pocket&#8221; for the artist or emcee&#8217;s vocal<\/strong> recordings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tcustomz.com\/mix-master.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7210 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/stereo-field-panning.png\" alt=\"stereo-field-panning\" width=\"379\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/stereo-field-panning.png 379w, https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/stereo-field-panning-300x172.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 379px) 100vw, 379px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>9.<\/strong> Low-level Mixing<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Mix at a low level interface \/ monitor volume starting out, and gradually increase the loudness\u00a0as you progress along with your mix.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you try mixing your music at a loud volume from\u00a0the beginning, over time your ear drums will start to become somewhat defensive to the loud sound and it can effect\u00a0the accuracy of how you&#8217;re hearing your mix.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re better off mixing at a soft volume first, then checking it again at a more moderate volume, and if everything sounds good, \u00a0cranking it up to a louder volume.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zzounds.com\/a--3187548\/item--FOCSAFFPRO40\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7217\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/mix-low-level-saffire-pro-40-1024x201.jpg\" alt=\"mix-low-level-saffire-pro-40\" width=\"670\" height=\"132\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/mix-low-level-saffire-pro-40-1024x201.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/mix-low-level-saffire-pro-40-300x59.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/mix-low-level-saffire-pro-40.jpg 1279w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 670px) 100vw, 670px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>10.<\/strong> Condition Your Ears<\/h2>\n<p>Last, but certainly not least of this top ten mixing tips list &#8211; condition your ears by listening to high-calibur, top-notch industry mixes on a regular basis.<\/p>\n<p>This alone will inherently raise your standard for what a good mix should sound like, and that will directly translate into your own music. \u00a0This in itself is pretty damn powerful!<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the specific sound you&#8217;re striving to achieve (<a href=\"http:\/\/tcustomz.com\/underground-beats.html\" target=\"_blank\">Underground Hip Hop<\/a>, mainstream pop, R&amp;B, etc) , you may have\u00a0a preference on what music you&#8217;ll get the most benefit from listening to.<\/p>\n<p>But the point is to <strong>listen to music that is much better than your own, and over time this will\u00a0have a drastic impact on how well you mix your personal music<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tcustomz.com\/mix-master.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7212\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/study-music.jpg\" alt=\"study-music\" width=\"587\" height=\"391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/study-music.jpg 660w, https:\/\/www.tcustomz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/study-music-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 587px) 100vw, 587px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>*BONUS*<\/strong> Study Established Mixing Engineers<\/h2>\n<p>As a bonus, my last mixing tip is to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">study established mixing engineers<\/span>. \u00a0There are a lot of great interviews and tutorials online from super knowledgeable musicians, producers, engineers, mixers and more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are a couple excellent resources that I recommend<\/strong>\u00a0for countless mixing tips as well as invaluable interviews with various people from the music industry.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/PensadosPlace\" target=\"_blank\">Pensado&#8217;s Place\u00a0on YouTube &gt;&gt;<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/recordingrevolution\" target=\"_blank\">Recording Revolution on YouTube &gt;&gt;<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>\u2014 LET\u2019S CONNECT!
