Music Production PC Build 2015
Desktop Case
For this build I’m using a custom LIAN LI PC-G70B Black Aluminum ATX Full Tower case that I’ve had in my possession for many years. It was actually used for one of my previous desktop builds, and also worked very well for my current build. This server-style case has a lot of really great space that you don’t necessarily get with a standard size desktop case. The extra size alone makes the computer a lot easier to work on as well as allowing for adequate airflow to keep the system cool – since I opted for standard air cooling rather than water cooling.
Motherboard
Having previously decided on building an AMD system versus Intel (based mainly off of good past experience with AMD setups), I found a really great military-grade motherboard to support the CPU I chose, the ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 AM3+ AMD 990FX. All of the components I picked for this build were based off online reviews and overall budget constraints, and this was one of the better ones I found for the price range. A great overclocking mobo that’s built to last!
Power Supply
My piece of advice when you’re building any high-end PC – don’t skimp on the power supply! Many times folks will focus the majority of their budget on the CPU, MOBO and RAM – but then don’t include a quality PSU to power the components. Without a solid, uninterrupted source of steady power, you run the risk of an unstable computer. This may cause random crashes or unexpected issues with the overall performance.
For my music production build I chose the FirePower Silencer MK III 750W 80Plus Gold Metallic Aviation Sem-Modular ATX PC Power Supply PPCMK3S750 (Formerly PC Power & Cooling). I’ve had really great experience with PC Power and Cooling PSUs in the past, and that was one of the reasons I chose it for this computer as well.
CPU Cooler
Many stock heatsink fans that come with your standard processors aren’t always the best at circulating airflow to your processor. And because of this it’s usually recommended to upgrade to an aftermarket cooler, that is if you are air cooling your system. The Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus is an absolute beast, and has tremendous reviews online!
