(Listen) Kanye West LOST Beat Tape 2001, Pre-College Dropout

Kanye West’s earlier work during the College Dropout and Late Registration era had a huge influence on my production sound during the mid-2000s when I first started beat making.

Check out Ye’s “lost” beat compilation from 2001 below!

I did recognize a number of the samples used in this tape; sounds like he flipped a few of them differently for some of his later released tracks.

At 21:28 – John Legend’s – “Let’s Get Lifted”

John Legend and Kanye West have been doing collaborations for a number of years. I remember listening to the Get Lifted project heavy when it first came out under the GOOD Music label in 2004, only 10 months after The College Dropout was released.  Additional instrumentation was added to the completed song, including piano accents from Legend, but without that soul-sample foundation it wouldn’t quite be the same.

At 41:50 – Mos Def’s – “Sunshine”

At 26:15 – Talib Kweli – “Guerrilla Monsoon Rap”

Which tracks do YOU recognize?

Love the early Kanye (College Dropout era) sound?
